Tuesday 29th December 2015 - Did I feel the earthquake in Vancouver? Earthquake what earthquake?

For many years the warning has always been that if Vancouver had an earth quake it would be a massive one.
When an earthquake finally occurred on Vancouver Island its effects were felt throughout Vancouver on the mainland.
I actually slept through the earthquake as did one of my German hostel friends. I woke the next day to find a text from my cousin who resides in a suburb near Vancouver airport. It read "Did you feel the earthquake?" My reply was "What earthquake? When did it happen?" At breakfast I heard that other hostel guest had run into the hallway when it happened. It could easily have been mistaken for some heavy guests making thumping sounds as they climbed down from their top bunks onto the dorm room floors.
Yes it was an earthquake and with very little to no aftershocks thank goodness.
It sounded like it could have been a 6. Something on the Richter scale but it was bearely a 5. something on the richter scale.

Wednesday 30th December 2015 - New Friends Made

Stanley Park and the Seawall is a must for all tourists who visit Vancouver.
Today was my first venture out with my new German friends since I caught a cold. We walked around Stanley Park's Seawall with several stops along the route to take photos and a stop at the totem poles. It was a beautiful day but cold. Usually I walk all the way back to the hostel but took the bus back as I was still sick.

Sunday 27th December 2015 - Shopping for Essentials

I desparately needed groceries and supplies so where does one go to obtain these in Vancouver?
I could have gone to the local Joes No Frills , The Independant , Safeway or IGA but for variety I shopped at Metrotown. This Mega Mall has almost everything.
First stop Great Canadian Superstore - fresh food and non perisherable foods, clothes kitchenware, drugstore, stationery, toys etc it has it all.
Second stop T and T Asian supermarket - Japanese Chinese Indian Malaysian Thai Taiwanese Korean etc it has it all from freshly sliced bread, sweet and savoury pastries, prepared cold and hot food, bubble teas, fresh and frozen seafood and fresh and frozen poultry and game meat, fresh and frozen meat in general, drinks, non perishable foods, dairy, kitchenware, vitamins, fresh and frozen vegetable and fruit, confectionery etc. I was surprised to find Yakault a fermented milk drink sold in Australia with similar products found in other Asian countries made under license in the US at this supermarket!

Saturday December 26th 2015 - Inspire at Enspire Foundation

Every year I try to find an organisation I can volunteer with.
In the past I have volunteered with a broad range of organisations within Australia and Canada. In the future I hope to extend this.
Examples of previous volunteer events in Australia include working as a museum guide which lead to a paid position, working at the pre race registration tent for the Blackmores running festival before participating in the race itself and working as a tax help officer for the ATO.
Examples of previous volunteer events in Canada include working at The Savation Army Christmas Day Meal and Seniors Brunch at Barclay House.
It is nice to give back to the community by volunteering.
In 2014 I found an organisation named Enspire and preregistered online to volunteer at the soup kitchen on 26th December. It was a lot of fun meeting new people who have a common interest in helping to feed the homeless in the downtown area of Vancouver. 2.5 hrs and the average production of 140 plates of food consisting of salad pasta garlic bread and rice crispies. I was so impressed with the operation of the soup kitchen I decided to preregister again to volunteer this year ie 26th Dec 2015.
I also registered to volunteer for The Vancouver Food Bank at Canada Place on 31st Dec 2015 which was a new event.
I encourage anyone who would like to enhance their vacation to include volunteering in their itinerary.
