Sunday 26th - Tuesday 28th January 2020 - Last Day In Vancouver & On The Plane

Another annual vacation over. It was my shortest trip to Canada but it seemed my longest. There was no sightseeing this year around or outside of Vancouver just my first non skiing week in Whistler and only a 1 day guest pass to the YMCA and some very quick shopping over my final weekend.

refer Facebook for photos

Today I woke up , had a shower, did a final pack of my carry on luggage, had my final complimentary breakfast downstairs then checked out leaving my carry on wheelie bag in storage with my other main suitcase and ski bag before heading off for my final day of shopping outside of the downtown core of Vancouver.

I walk down Davie Street catch the skytrain on the Canada Line to Oakridge first. I arrive just before the stores open at 11 am on Sunday and waited. I was shocked to see that most of the Oakridge Shopping Centre had been boarded up with white due to a major renovation of the decades old shopping centre ( it is one of those old shopping centres that has been around since the 1960's where the back is the front entrance and started off in as an open strip mall later becoming an enclosed mall as the population increased around the area - a lot like St Ives Shoping Village except without the carpet - not a lot of refurbished shopping centres still have carpet these days!) To get to the new food court and to Papyrus in the newer sections of Oakridge Mall you had to walk past the carpark entrance or via narrow tunnels. Once there the new food court looked great. Most of the stores had relocated either temporarily or permanently therefore there was no store directory. I had to ask the information or concierge desk for assistance. Crate & Barrel was still where it was at what I assume is the back of the shopping centre closest to the entrance to Oakridge Skytrain Station.

At Papyrus I purchased some Hannukah cards as they are not readily available in Australia.

Onto to Crate & Barrel via Room In Order. I took heaps of photos for work but no purchases this year.

Back on the Skytrain I stop at Broadway City Hall to stop at MEC to look at a snowshoe bag which turned out to be too small then down a few stores to Jonti's No Frills supermarket - my favourite place to shop for no name products and basic groceries. I purchase a bag of Mango Salted Kettle Chips - snacks for the 15 hour flight home tonight.

Onto my next shopping destination Park Royal North and Park Royal South as well as Park Royal Village in West Vancouver where I will spend the rest of my afternoon and early evening. Park Royal Village is always so pretty lit up at night to walk around. But first to what I came here for. Atmosphere & Sportchek to see if tgey had any short snowboarding bags or XL snowshoeing bags - no so onto my next stops via Winners A Buck or Two, no time to stop at Simons this year through to Shoppers Drugmart to buy some antihistamines and  cortesone cream ( a sign in the elevator clearly advising surgical face masks are sold out before you reach the second floor).

Next and final stop - well not really I had to backtrack Michaels to look at their baking cake decorating and party section.

https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10222615156627996&id=1244668633

Back to Park Royal across the main road on (Marine Drive) to London Drugs to top up my Compass Card. I thought Shoppers Drugmart did top ups but they don't.

Look a machine . Done.

I forgot I did stop for the most disgusting fried chicken and choice of side for a quick takeout lunch for CAN$5 plus taxes from Loblaws supermarket. I should have had Tim Hortons! The fried chicken was awful but the onion rings were good ( probably because I have never had a fried onion ring in my life therefore it was probably a crappy serving of fried onion rings that tasted great to me as I had nothing to compare them to - either that or I was just hungry). While I was there I had a look at the baking section - nothing much that was interesting.

I cross the road it was getting dark and around 6 pm. I get back to the hostel which was a longer then usual walk as the bus stop near Burrard was closed due to roadworks.

I have enough time to retrieve my ski bag, main suitcase and carry on wheelie bag from storage to do a final repack as well as recharge my phone in the foyer as it was down to the final 15% of charge left and then call a yellow cab to the airport around 8.15 pm which is more then the full 3 hours recommended check in  time before your international flight departs.

The cab is really quick to arrive and I am on my way in the cab to the airport however a little way over the Burratd Bridge I suddenly remember that I had forgotten my phone and that my phone charging was still charging in the foyer of the hostel so I told the cab driver  who advises me that we are not too far away and turns back.

I run into the hostel and quickly retrieve my phone and charger. It is still not charged yet but I will continue to recharge it once I reach the departure gate at the airport.

An extra $10 on top of the usual capped $35 taxi fare from downtown Vancouver to Vancouver International airport and 30 minutes later I reach Vancouver International Airport however there is nowhere for the taxi to stop to drop me off and no carts. Finally the taxi manages to find a parking spot and there are a few carts around. I load the cart and make my way to the Air Canada check in kiosks and check in counters. It is quite a walk as the closest parking spot the taxi was able to find was at the Air Canada Domestic Terminal.

I find the Air Canada check in counters and self service kiosks - there is already a long queue of people as there were 2 Air Canada flights departing at the same time that night ie 11.55 pm.

I decided to attempt an automated check in at one of the Air Canada self service kiosks, if it fails I'll just join the long queue. It worked sdo onto the rather confusing queue where people had no idea whether they were queuing up for a bag drop only or manual check in. Air Canada staff gave no clear directions of which queue was for what service ( they probably had no idea themselves).

I go to the bag drop machine at the end as no one else was using it. After self tagging my 2 pieces of check in luggage, I place my main suitcase on the belt of the bag drop machine to be weighed but the light would not go green. I ask for assistance but the Air Canada staff were not realky helpful. My checked in suitcase was 500g over the 23 kg limit hence I could not do an automatic bag drop so I had 2 options repack my 2 checked in suitcase so that my suitcase was under 23 kg limit by moving something to my ski bag which was way under the 23kg limit or join the end of the queue and do a manual overthe counter check in. I chose to rejoin the queue to do a manual over the counter check in which was a very long queue by now. To save time I decided to drop off my ski bag at the oversized bag drop off first befote joining the end of the queue to check in my main suitcase. It was a good move as it did not take long to drop my ski bag off as I already had my bag tag and boatding pass. I join the queue to check in my suitcase and it was after 10 pm before I actually reached the check in counter. I needed all 3 hours prior to my flight departure time just to reach the boarding gate in time! It took me 1.5 hours just to check in, I still had not walked to the security gate or passed security yet. When I went to check my bag in, my suitcase was actually under the 23kg limit - what the? Off it went onto the belt in  just a few minutes as soon as I reached the check in desk after lining up for an hour and a half!

Next stop walk to the security gate - no time for Tim Hortons tonight. I always have trouble passing through security - they are so rude - another 45 minutes to pass through as I always get pulled over for a body search even when I have no metal on me at all - water emptied or drunk from my tgermos drink bottle, shoes off, gels separated, laptop, coat etc all out in separate trays to be scanned through the xray. I should be clean but am always pulled over for some reason. This time it was the amount of gel or liquid based tolitries and cosmetics I was carrying - I again had stuff taken out of my plastic cosnetic bag and confiscated. I don't understand what comes in must go back out with me so I selected moistly stuff that were free samples or replaceable to be confiscated. Next the long walk to the boarding gate which is usually a very long walk to the end of the airport - usually gate #  50 +.  I reach the gate and have just enough time to purchase a bottle of water ( price gouging) and recharge my phone before boarding my long haul flight of 15 hours back to Sydney. I usually have a seat in Zone 3 right towards the back of the plane in rows 40+. I arrive at my asile seat and again the overhead lockers above my seat are full of life jackets so I place my wheelie bag in the larger overhead locker opposite. For some reason there was noone else seated in the row I was in - 3 seats next to me all empty I wonder why - was it just luck, all other seats around me behind to the right and in front of me were full. I still didn't feel comfortable spreading out to sleep though so slept upright for almost my entire flight. I didn't eat much of my dinner or snack either but ate my breakfast with a Borrocca. I must have watched 4 movies and all the episodes of Superstore available as well during my flight ( which I did during my long haul flight over as well).

Back at Sydney airport it was quicker then I thought to clear customs and collect my luggage. My ski bag ended up arriving on the normal luggage carousel instead of from the oversized luggage area however the first on last off principle still applied although my suitcase was not the very first or very last to be checked in back in Vancouver therefore it showed up closely after my ski bag.

I walk to Mcdonalds to wait for my ASN prebooked and prepaid shuttle home. Home around noon 2 days later. Shower pay bills partial unpack prep for work and a very long sleep. Straight back to work tomorrow morning and the long sleep really belped get all the jetlag out of my system.

End of another short but sweet Canadian holiday for another year. Treats for my work collegues  were 2 x packets of Coffee Crisps this year as they liked them previously.

I knock on unit 1B's door to give Allan a bar of No Name French Chocolate as a gift I purchased for him. He says thanks but a few days later suspect he was moving out of the apartment block. I was correct a week later when it was pouring with rain he was gone. I found it a lityle rude that he did not even tell me or say bye. I will never know why he had to leave.. The apartment block is almost empty now - at least 4 apartments are now vacant however what I found really strange was I received an email notifying me that I had not paid my rent for 3 weeks without any notice  and threatened with a notice of termination when I had only been gone a little over a week and had made a weekly rent payment as soon as I landed. As soon as I received tbis I sent a complaint to The Department of Fair Trading. I don't have to pay my rent weekly I just opted to and my lease contract ends in about a month with an option to renew it ( I asked about this right from the beginning). I have been li ing here for 10 months now asnd have paid my rent weekly without fail. As a first time renter I think I am being taken advantage of from the landlord and my biggest concern is getting my bond back in full as I never received a response to whether it was received. There was a weeks rent paid at the beginning that I had paid missing from their records as well. I haven't heard anything about lease renewal which also concerns me. Other then this there was my complaints about a faulty fridge and not only faulty but dangerous showerhead and screen both of which fell on me. The screen has been taken off by me and has sat permanently wrapped in a sheet on the apartment floor against the window and the showerhead remains upright limiting waterflow. I don't have time to muck around so have been just putting up with any faults.

Saturday 25th January 2020 - YMCA Acqua Fit Shallow & Happy Luna New Year!

First thing Saturday morning was walk to the YMCA to do an intensive 45 minute Shallow Aquafit class. I used the dumbbells for the entire class instead of just 15 minutes of it and worked out double time. Then it was 15 minutes in the hot tub followed by a shower and rinse off the chlorine from my bathers before heading back to the HI to have something to eat. AFTER lunch it was then off to do some shopping again.

Off to Metropolis @ Metrotown on the skytrain. Here I visited Winners Old Navy Real Canadian superstore Sportchek T &T supermarket ( mask on and grab and go a loaf of wholewheat bread) and a rather large Japanese store with very interesting products but no purchases made.

Purchases included chocolate chocolate and a few weird and wonderful gadgets for my boss and myself. I took heaps of photos of home and tableware for my boss. Kept purchases to a minimum though. Bought the cutest squeeze bottle but only bought 1 as it was rather expensive for a squeeze bottle.

The things I actually needed to purchase this year were unavailable so there goes my shopping list.

End of another day. Back to the HI to cook my last supper of the fresh rock fish from my purchases yesterday boiled in a Thai  noodle soup with soya sauce and dry slaw ( mixed shredded cabbage) before leaving Vancouver tomorrow night.

Packing and to  bed.

Final shopping trip tomorrow to Broadway MEC and Jonti's No Frills Supermarket ( I love this supermarket!), Oakridge Shopping Centre to Papyrus ( another retail chain of card stores closing down - very disappointed that Carlton Cards store had already closed at Metrotown when I arrived today) and Crate & Barrel - what a shock when I arrived at Oakridge Shopping Centre 90% of the shopping centre was boarded up for a major renovation and to access the parts of the shopping centre that were open you had to cut through a series of "tunnels". Finally onto my final destination across the other side of town Park Royal North & South and Park Royal Village all in West Vancouver to Michaels and Shoppers Drug Mart and Atmosphere.

Friday 24th January 2020 - Leaving Whistler Back To Rainy Vancouver

Got up at 5 am this morning but did not need to as I was totally packed and organised ready to check out of my apartment by 10 am and depart Whistler on the Skylynx coach back to rainy Vancouver at 11.30 am.

My pick up was a little late and finally departed Whistler Village Gateloop at 12 noon arriving in good time back in downtown Vancouver by 2 pm.

I had downloaded the Uber app hoping to try it on its first day of operations but it was all too complicated so I rang and booked a Yellow Cab instead  which arrived very quickly to pick me up from the back of the Hyatt Hotel. Traffic was horrendous today around the city so it took me a little more time and cost me a little more then it should have.

Yes Vancouver has finally got 2 share ride companies approved for operation launched today after about 3 years of trying to have them approved. I think most cities around the world have Uber or some sort of share ride now except Vancouver which was a little slow to adopt it.

So I will have to try it next time.

I have now checked in and am about to go out and see the city as I only have 48 hours here before flying back home to Sydney  but first I need to deal with a few bills.

I walk around the downtown core of Vancouver down Robson Street the main shopping drag stopping off at most of my regular joints such as Rocky Mountain Chocolates, London Drugs (again) even Miniso and Muji both very new to Vancouver but well established and very popular Japanese chain stores in Australia. I continue walking down Robson St as it gets dark and the pretty street lights turn on - more have been added since the last time I was here. I walk past Hons Chinese Restaurant an intitution on Robson Street for decades and which I visited for mainly take away in my earlier years in Vancouver - I find that it had closed down permanently. I then walk down further to my favourite kitchenware store Chocolate Mousse which I visit at least once almost every year to purchase something , also an institution of many decades  I find that it has also closed down permanently. Robson Street is now full of small to medium sized restaurants cafes souvenir stores ice cream palours Asian grocery stores chocolate and lolly shops branded clothing and footwear stores, beauty palours , cosmetic stores and hotel chains - the selection of stores along both sides of Robson Street are constantly changing a lot like Oxford Street in Sydney.
2 of the hotels I have stayed at in the past have long gone replaced with an empty construction site or redevelopment block -  Robsinstrusse Hotell and The (Sheraton) Landmark Hotel are just 2 of them that have been knocked down and replaced as construction sites. The other hotels that I stayed at in the past The Greenbrier Apartment Hotel is still there although this little apartment hotel block has changed hands quite a few times and the "Apartment" has been dropped off its name and it is just now known as The Greenbrier Hotel. 2 giant lion statues have been added in the past few years to the front entrance to The Greenbrier Hotel. Same with the not so glamourous Tropicana Suite Hotel.

So far all I have had all day to eat was a BLT wrap from Tim Hortons. I was feeling a bit hungry again so kept walking down to the Safeway right at the bottom of Robson St - it will be a long uphill walk back tonight with any groceries I buy. I reach Safeway and find the escalator (in Vancouver, there is an awful lot of them) not operating! - same in Sydney.

At Safeway I purchase a bag of dry slaw, 2 potatoes, a piece of snaper ( which they call rockfish and it's wild and is really cheap) , and I could not resist it - my favourite Chinese Cantonese style takeout. ( refer my Facebook a few years back) usually yummy hot and fresh but tonight there was not much left and lots of people trying to load up their containers of what's left!

I could not wait to eat it back in the dining room of the hostel therefore stop at the Robson St " public markets"  ( well it used to be a proper one) to eat my Cantonese takeaway from Safeway which was by now cold. A quick toliet stop then it was a long walk back uphill to the hostel.

End of my first night back in Vancouver . Time to sleep after unloading my groceries for breakfast lunch and dinner for tomorrow. So tired I have a relatively early night.

Thursday 23rd January 2020 - Final Day & Night In Whistler

My last day in Whistler was spent cleaning washing drying packing taking out the rubbish and watching The Food Network for the very last time.

I went for my traditional last ice skate at Whistler Olympic Plaza unfortunately the outdoor section of the rink was being cut the entire session so I could only skate around in the indoor section of the ice rink.

My mission today however was to find Peaked Pies in Whistler and find out why everyone raves about them and drive 2 hours just to get one.

OK so they were featured on a morning news show the other day as it is Australia Day in a few days time.

Here is what I thought of the chicken mushroom and leek peaked pie I had as posted on Facebook.

The pie by the way was more expensive then the Lost Lake snowshoeing pass I purchased yesterday.

"I had to try Peaked Pies an Australian Pie Bakery in Whistler - people drive 2 hours just to have one of these pies. What did I think? A rather expensive version of Harry's Cafe De Wheels Pies. I could probably buy 2 of those for a single Peaked Pie!"

If I was going to have a Peaked Pie it had to be a Peaked Peaked Pie so that means a pie topped with a scoop of mash mushy pies and gravy. The mashed potato was good and did not taste like Deb packet powdered potato. The scoop of mushy pies was not too blended and you could make out the pea bits and the gravy was OK but after a while tasted very much like Gravox packet gravy with a slight chemical after taste. The gravy was pooled around the botton of the outside of the pie crust as if the gravy was a moat and the pie the tower. Was this flood of gravy intentional? It should have poured over the top of the peas mash and pie. The pie was in a cardboard box and there was no foil or pattycase enclosing it. OK now let's get serious. All I ever hear people say about the pie is the crust. I didn't think the crust was that good but it was nice. I didn't buy a pie just to eat the mash the peas the gravy or the crust - I purchased the pie to taste the pie and IT WAS "pretty ordinary" indeed as described by fellow Australians.  I could hardly taste the chicken mushroom and leek in the pie, all I could taste was the crust gravy mash and mushy peas. For about AUS$16 It would not be worth driving 2 hours for. Now you don't have to anyway as they are opening stores in Vancouver and have 1 there already.

Peaked Pies are not the first Australian Pie company to open in Whistler. Many years ago there was one called Four & Twenty Pies ( No relation to Four & Twenty Pies back home either).  Strange enough one of the guys in the hot tub actually told me that Four and Twenty was actually code for cannabis  - why isn't anyone surprised since it is now legal in BC however it wasn't back then. Oh now I get it "Pot Pies" ! Rating 6/10 another fad go to El Furniture in Whistler instead and get double the amount of good food and drink for the same price.

Wednesday 22nd January 2020 - Snowshoeing Around Lost Lake Park

After another do nothing day on Tuesday, I spent most of Wednesday snowshoeing on Lost Lake. It was a little wet but a great day of exercise.

A day pass cost just under CAN$12 to access the trails around Lost Lake Park which you purchase at The Passiv Haus ( it's Austrian) or Passive House. Snowshoe or cross country ski rentals are an additional charge.

I was snowhoeing along on my own but met up with an older Australian couple from the Gold Coast also snowshoeing but for the first time. They had abandoned their attempt at cross country skiing for the first time leaving it to their children and grand children to it. It was the wife's 60th birthday today.

We snow shoes all the way to the Beachcut - a few km green trail. Many cross country trails were crossed and it took us about an hour to reach - stopping to take a few photos. It was raining but it didn't really bothered us.

When we reached The Beachcut the couple's grandchildren were already at the warming hut. Ah The Warming Hut - I have seen this in a previous snowshoeing adventure but never been in it. The grandchildren told us that there is actually a fire in there. I go in with my snowshoes on as it was just too difficult to take them off and put them back on. It wasn't even a real fire not even a gas fireplace like the one in my apartment - it looked like a hanging screen projecting a small fake fireplace but the hut was warm enough and even had a spider hanging from one of its ceiling lamps!

There were holiest in the area but no running bubbles as they were all frozen. The only running water was in the toliets - not a good idea to drink from the toilet taps. The grandchildren were thirsty however there was no water around but Grandpa came prepared, never snowshoe without being prepared - in his backpack was a full hot thermos of hot chocolate - enough for himself and his grandchildren. Grandma didn't need one - she just needed to rest. She also didn't like breaking rules so when we found out how to get back to the Passiv Haus - we didn't have much choice there was no quick way of getting back there. We could not use the 2.6 km cross country tracks so we had 2 choices  one of which I did not recommend as I made a mistake last time snowshoeing this route and it took me 2 hours to get back to the Passiv Haus ie go to the left and follow the trail up and around Lost Lake then following the upper trail all the way back down to the Passive Haus. The other option which was much shorter was to go back to the trail we original came from and follow the trail until we seat the fork in the trail near the emergency point and veer right then follow the trail down. This we did and it was a lot flatter quicker. We finally reached the Passive Haus a little past 3 pm and it was not even dark yet!

Their grandchildren were already at the Passive Haus without their jackets on just ski pants and t shirts. I was told how they were not used to all this snow equipment- it's just thongs and shorts on the Gold Coast!

The grandfather told me that last time he was at Lost Lake it was Spring and there were a few nude men around Lost Lake - it's a nudie beach apparently!

After having a rest I strapped my snowshoes back on , said my goodbyes and nice to have met you and made my way back to my apartment - it was straight into the hot tub for me!!

I spent about an hour in the hot tub before heading back upstairs and having a shower and change of clothes.

Dinner The Food Channel then to bed. End of another day in Whistler.

I will miss snowshoeing around Lost Lake and the solitude and back to nature.

Monday 20th January 2020 - Vallea Lumina

Who has been reading my blog when I haven't written anything about it yet? I was still attending the event! Sorry for the delay, I had a fall last night walking down the final downhill section of the event by stepping and slipping on some black ice. I was so careful all night and was almost at the end of the loop when I fell and yes I did draw blood on my left hand which I bandaged up when I arrived back in Whistler. It could have been worse but my backpack with my trusty stuffed possum cushioned my back from the fall. I had worn my yak tracks on over my hiking boots all day and had them with me but did not put them on at night for the duration of the event thinking the trail was well maintained. It was so dark and no flash photography or head lights were allowed.

If you would like to see some footage of it I have already uploaded  just a snipet of the event onto YouTube.

I booked the very first show at 6 pm. This includes a return shuttle to and from the Village Gateloop Coach Terminal to and from Cougar Mountain about 15 minutes drive outside of Whistler Village.

It was fantastic. I rate it a 9/10. Very well organised - I could not give it a perfect rating because of my fall but if you are in Whistler it is a must see anytime of the year. Back at Whistler Village Gate Loop Coach Terminal before 9 pm.

OK back track to what I got upto today. This year will be my first non skiing vacation in Whistler. After 25 years visiting Whistler I decided I had seen and been enough on mountain ie Blackcomb and Whistler Mountains. This year it was time to spend more time around the trails of Whistler and getting closer to nature. I started with a hike around the multiuser trails around Whistler. I spent time around the valley trail past the Benchlands Lost Lake and one of the golf courses. No snowshoeing yet but I had my Yak Traks on. I took heaps of photos touched the trees and spoke to them. I just spent time enjoying the solitude and looking out for any wildlife or lack of except for birdlife. It is only my first weekday in Whistler therefore I will start snow shoeing in the next few days. I probably walked the trails for about 4 or 5 km today excluding the Vallea Lumina loop.

Photos on Facebook.

End of my Monday in Whistler. Beautiful day today - no snow or rain and still loads of snow around.

Thursday 16th - Tuesday 28th January 2020 - Where Am I Off To? All Will Be Revealed When I Land Safely At My Destination

Photos refer my Facebook page

DAY 1 - Friday 17th January 2020
I only had about 5 hours sleep but it was a very good 5 hours sleep. I was up all night packing whilst watching the SBS Food Channel.

Prebooked a return ASN Shuttle picking up from home at 7.45 am to Sydney International Airport. On time pick up and arrived at Sydney Airport way before 9 am before check in actually opened. Traffic was great all the way to the airport despite the rain - yep it had to rain quite substantially the day I depart Sydney and in the the middle of forcasted thunder storms around noon. Now you know why I am concerned.

A quick sit down and answer to my manager's email. I will refund the $6 in $2 coins she gave me after work yesterday  for a luggage trolley at the airport - not needed due to diversion of traffic to the airport via arrivals instead of departures - there were plenty of  dumped free trolleys around to use.

Load the luggage trolley and head to check in gates. Waited until it opened. Asked for assisted check in as everytime I use the Air Canada automated check in kiosks they fail for me. Bags tagged boarding pass received  it was time to head for the bag drop counter. Passport and boarding pass presented and checked, 2 checked in bags weighed (oops main suitcsse was a few kg over but still ok ) and carry on tagged. Off  to drop my oversized ski bag off ( which was not so oversized this year!)

Next to dump my luggage trolley and head for departures gate and go through security. Yep shoes off, laptop out, and empty my water bottle before going through security.

I still kept beeping and was wondering why - I had to surrender my passport and boarding pass to security but kept an eagle eye on it! I had forgotten to take it out of its xray proof cover! oops.

Shoes on and everything repacked ( there has got to be a better way to clear security) onto my next stop breakfast of a sausage and egg McMuffin and a bottle of cold water - absolute rip off!

Head for the lounge area near gate 59 - yep it is a long walk and eat my breakfast - add a byo banana- always carry fresh fruit with you when travelling.

Flight has been delayed a little but not as late as previously informed online. Still worried about taking off during thunderstorms though.

Admiring the Chinese (Luna) New Year decorations around the airport full of red and gold colours for good luck - yep I will need this.

Waiting waiting waiting........

TBC.......

Still waiting to board - a gate change to 56 from the original gate 59 and an estimated delayed departure time of 1.20 pm.

Finally boarded the plane. Found my seat right near the back of the plane in the middle row of 4 seats seat 43G - aisle seat with right leg out.

So tired I fell asleep - no blanket just my inflated neck pillow which kept deflating only to be woken up from a flight attendant dumping down my special meal with a rather big thump. This was the first of 3 meals - sleep thump sleep thump. I really liked the first meal a non lactose herbed tomato sauce chicken with root vegetables with what looked like a mixed bean salad accompanied with a soy dressing of some sort and a chocolate brownie with some sour berry of some sort in it. I ate it all!

Next was a snack - a prepackaged sandwich with a spread of some sort - yuk not so nice therefore I only ate half of it but when the normal meal service passed me I was offered that as well. No thanks this 'snack is always a sandwich and served at night so you can't make out what you are eating.

Breakfast - chicken mushrooms a hard boiled egg and some sauted green leaves - not bad again served with a bread roll and canola spread.

An hour later, the flight lands in Vancouver and as soon as it hits the runway there is a clap from the passenger(s) across from me. No one else claps but the plane landed safely at its destination on a runway covered in snow 1 hour and 5 minutes late.

Because this year is a very short last minute vacation, there is no pressure for me to get anywhere or see anyone as soon as I arrive therefore I take my time. I grab my bag from the overhead locker a few lockers down as the overhead locker above my seat is filled with spare yellow life jackets (so this is why nobody wants to sit in the last 3 rows of the plane because there is no overhead storage lockers - they are all full of safety equipment or delay supplies in crates ( one overhead locker was full of red crates with marked "tarmac delay snacks" on them!). Also do not select the middle rows of seats on an Air Canada flight select seats in the rows left and right of the plane as the overhead lockers are much larger. No wonder some carry on sized wheelie suitcases didn't fit!

A much needed toilet stop then fill in the electronic landing card before going through security/immigration and luggage claim. Nothing to declare but my luggage was one of the last bags to show up on the baggage carousel - Remember the first in last out principle . I was one of the first people to check in at Sydney International Airport at the Air Canada check in/bag drop counter therefore my luggage was last to appear on the baggage carousel at Vancouver International Airport ( just before the baggage carousel shut off which means all luggage is now off the plane).

DAY 2 - Friday 17th January 2020 Continued (Technically still day 1 ie Thursday 16th January 2020 )

After arriving in Vancouver on the same day you departed Sydney, it was time to grab a taxi to where I will be staying overnight before heading for Whistler for the week on Friday morning. Taxis from the airport to downtown Vancouver and to different areas of the mainland of Vancouver are costed according to zones. It usually cost between $30 and $35 from Vancouver Airport to downtown Vancouver. It cost me $32 ( a few dollars cheaper then last visit). It is ok if you don't have cash Visa is accepted.

Arrive at the HI Downtown Vancouver and it is too early to check in so I dump my bags into storage and prepay my 2 stays there so I don't have to worry about it upon my return from Whistler a week later. I am given a card to access the kitchen and the toliets to have a shower. I pull out a change of clothes, a towel and some toiletries from my carry on wheelie bag to have a shower before heading off to organise problematic stuff.

Problem # 1 which was suppose to have been refunded by now but has not. I was charged the full non member rate at HI Downtown Vancouver upon prepayment of my 3 nights stay when I should have been charged the members rate. I produced my YHA card but it was not accepted due to the expiry date on the back of it. I am sure I am a current YHA member as I just stayed at YHA Melbourne Central in November however was never issued with a new electronic membership card. This excuse was also not accepted by the HI Downtown Vancouver reception desk. I then went to email YHA Melbourne Central inquiring about my YHA membership and was sent an email response with a copy of my electronic YHA membership which does not expire until September 2020. I was therefore in the right and forwarded a copy of this email to HI Downtown Vancouver for a refund of the difference. Since arriving in Whistler I have received a response however am yet to see the physical refund of $18 .

Problem # 2 My Scotiabank account has been closed therefore I had to reopen it at the closest Scotiabank I knew of which is not the branch listed where I had opened my account at. The branch I opened my original account at has been closed for 2 years. I opened the account but had to come back and line up  to deposit some money into it. In the mean time I went to Charlie's  Currency Exchange nearby  and exchange some Australian dollars for Canadian dollars. Apparently they have one of the best rates in town and handy as the Scotiabank won't exchange Australian dollars.

Next onto get a new sim card from London Drugs. They recommended this prepaid sim card to me last year I was here and it is quite good and value for money. No more expensive Rogers or poor coverage and problematic Fido mobile service providers. They all use the same networks anyway! For $40 you get unlimited text messaging local calls within Canada and 4 Gb of data - enough for my 1 or 2 weeks stay in Canada as there are wifi hotspots everywhere. I also purchased a swingaway jar opener to try which I meant to purchase last year but forgot.

I was feeling a little hungry so next stop was to first check my balance remaining on my Compass card and then head to the Independent Supermarket on the way back to the HI Downtown Vancouver stopping at the old Marketplace IGA which is now just called an IGA and rather boring.

From The Independant Supermaket on Davie Street  It was a small lobster bisque and Italian Melt Panini for dinner at under CAN$10. Nice and hot and great for a freezing cold day in Vancouver covered in snow. I was about to be charged the full amount for the soup and panini but there was a clear special soup and panini sign up which was taken down immediately after my purchase. They had to honour my purchase.

As soon as I got back to the HI I ate my dinner in the dining room in solitude before heading upstairs to Room 324 for a reorganisation of my wheelie bag and backpack for my trip to Whistler and a  early night. There is only one other girl in my 4 share female room.

Sleep sleep and more sleep!!!!

DAY 2 -  Friday 17th January 2020

Finally off to Whistler this morning but before I leave I wake up early, have a shower, do a final pack before heading downstairs for a complimentary breakfast before collecting my luggage from storage checking out and calling a cab for 10 am. I requested a cab 40 minutes before the coach is due to depart from Burrard Station for Whistler. By 10 am the cab still had not arrived outside the HI so I began to panic and tried to call an alternative cab only to be on hold the entire 15 minutes  right up until the taxi arrived outside the HI. I hang up the phone and load my luggage into the cab bound for the coach stop at Burrard Station. Such a rude taxi driver would only drop me on the corner next to Burrard Station so I had to drag my luggage with me across the road to where the Skylnx coach to Whistler departs from. I have not yet exited the taxi when a guy off the street opens the taxi door and sits down before realising that I was still in it and my luggage is still in the boot.

I asked the taxi driver for a receipt and he ignored me so I had to ask him again. No tip for him. I hooked my bags together and dragged them across the road to where the coach was due to arrive at 10.40 am. A  Canadian local spots me struggling with my luggage and offers me a hand and I advise him that I should be fine and just have to cross the road and thank him.

There are other people waiting for buses and coaches to different destinations. The most popular being the Capilano Suspension Bridge which provides a free shuttle bus and of course Whistler. Most of the people waiting were bound for Whistler on the 10.40 am Skylyx coach however there are other cheaper shuttle buses to Whistler such as the one waiting there which looked like a white school bus  - the driver only had one passenger and was poaching for customers and advised me that he also dropped off door to door in Whistler. Maybe next time I said to him.

A white unmarked Universal Coachlines Coach stops outside the side entrance of the Hyatt Hotel next to Burrard Station and the driver just leaves after locking the coach just before 10.40 am. Is this our coach? It turns out no it is not, our Skylynx coach to Whistler is parked a a short distance behind it and everyone starts to walk towards it dragging their luggage with them only to walk back. The coach is late and the driver very sloppy with not tagging luggage and checking his manifest before people boarded. No directions of where to go when we arrived in Whistler that afternoon.

The driver of the white unmarked coach finally returns and moves his coach. Our coach driver is very unimpressed.

It is 11.11 am and we are still parked outside the back of the Hyatt Hotel entrance next to Burrard Station.  I am unsure when we are suppose to arrive in Whistler but I thought it was suppose to be 1.30 pm. It states on our ticks to be ready waiting for the coach 15 minutes before departure time. I was there around 10.30 am. Late arrivals were still arriving after 10.40 am.

The driver points out a few points of interest along the route  ie The Sea To Sky Highway. If you haven't driven along this route before it is a must do. The scenery changes from rain to sun to snow.

Arrive at The Village Gateloop Coach Terminal on time and I transfer onto another bus as I had booked door to door return transfers.

First thing is dump my bags in the foyer of my apartment block. Next find the check in desk down the road. It is still too early to check in. 4 pm is check in time with no guarantees of early check in. It used to be 3 pm.

Time to go to the supermarket. When I arrive I am shocked to find it is no longer a Marketplace IGA it has been renovated and renamed Fresh Street Market. New owners and new interior. The old chaurlfts hanging from the ceilings with dummy in full ski gear sitting on them have all been removed. It no longer had the wide variety of products it used to carry as an IGA supermarket and it has become more expensive. I found butter cheaper at Whistler Village Grocery store! I didn't even like the bread there. The only thing I liked from Fresh Street Market was the frozen pizza dough at around CAN$1.50 a round I purchased it twice as it was so good.

Back to my apartment it was time to unload my groceries and drag my luggage to my apartment. One lift is out of order so there was a long queue for the other one. I am on the 5th floor so I hope when I check out I don't have to drag each piece down 5 sets of stairs!

Again I am a little annoyed I was not advised in advance that the 20 year old lifts will be partially out of order during my stay. At least the pool and hot tubs are working during my stay! Just as well I held off paying my maintenance fees this year into after my stay. I still had to pay a holding deposit upon checking in though.

I unpack and relax and have an early first night in Whistler. Initial photos of the view taken.

DAY 3 - Saturday 18th January 2020
It was time for some exercise so today I went ice skating at the local indoor outdoor ice skating rink in Whistler Village where the Olympic Plaza is. It is snowing quite heavily as I skate. Everyone is out playing in the snowplay area next to the ice skating rink behind Marketplace Village North.

It snowed last night and it snowed today and continued to snow.

DAY 4 - Sunday 19th January 2020
Today was a do nothing day. I slept in as I think the jetlag was finally kicking in. Today it was a baking and cooking day. I made a yummy chocolate blueberry chocolate chip and banana cake covered with a vanilla and lime butter cream. I also made a chicken noodle and vegetable soup. The cake was made with the under AUS$1 cake mix I bought wirh me from Sydney and the free packet of vanilla flavoured icing sugar mixture I got from last year's Sweet Expo and also bought with me from Sydney. I opened my balcony door to quickly cool my cake down before icing it. The iced cake tasted even better after leaving it in the fridge over time. I almost forgot, I made a a shallot capsicum and mushroom pizza as well - all gone but I did save some for the next day. I love baking when I am in Whistler. Another snow day today.

Saturday 11th January 2020 - Dodecalis Luminarium

This will probably be my final blog in Sydney before my next adventure.

The annual Sydney Festival is now on and I have been planning to see the above installation for quite a while.

However don't believe everything you read about it on it's website as the information on it is not only deceiving but confusing and incorrect. The event is meant to be a free event as advertised however it is only free for a few hours each day and is actually shut for cleaning and maintenance on one of the days with only specific paid sessions open which means no free entry on that day at all. Also don't book online as they charge an additional booking fee, there is no booking fee if you turn up earlier ( at least an hour earlier)  and book a session I recommend a minimun of 2 sessions in advance on the day you would like to attend if you can't make it into the free entry sessions. If you do pay to get in you are limited to half hour time limits ( we were told when queuing up for entry into our session 15 minutes) and it says you don't have to line up but you still do so turn up to your paid session half an hour earlier. The free sessions end at 4 pm and paid sessions start at 5.30 pm therefore don't turn up like I did at 5 pm thinking you could get into the free session - the website is deceiving with daily free session times. There is a limited capacity of 80 people per session which the organisation somehow oversold for the 5.30 pm session - how I don't know as it was allocation exhausted for the 5.30 pm session when I tried to book a ticket online for this session - over sold and late - VERY poorly organised!!!!!!

I arrived at 5 pm but when I arrived the free sessions had already closed at 4 pm which I argued was not even specified on their website and the next paid session was at 5.30 pm with allocation already exhausted. I asked if they could fit me into the 5.30 pm session as I was on my own but they said they could not so 6 pm session it was. At $20 for half an hour -  it better be worth it! How do they even know if your ticket is for the 5.30 pm or 6 pm session there isn 't anything written on it.

Very poor organisation I rate it a weak 5/10 . There is a viewing platform in front of the ICC building - I went up to have a look - a view of what? There is nothing to see, the installation is all enclosed. I think this is another one of my don't bother to visit events. Warning to parents it is only free entry for kids under 3 years of age! Where does it specify this? Therefore sorry parents who have more then 1 child!

5.45 pm snd I am still near the end of the line for the 5.30 pm session. Good thing I lined up at 5.30 pm! The line is moving
VERY slowly!!!!!! Yes I snuck in! Just as well as the 5.30 pm session did not enter until the 6 pm session and therefore this delayed the 6pm, 6.30 pm and 7 pm sessions.

The couple behind me just left - they went to the box office to see if they could get an exchange for their tickets for another day or time as they had dinner reservations tonight. It is now 6 pm! Still in the queue and it has hardly moved. Hope it doesn"t start to rain!

Looks like shoes off socks on off we go. So strict my shoes were moved from a cubby hole between two cubby holes to one lower down.

Sorry I just lost another full description of my experience inside - my blog crashed yet again!!!!!

I can't be bothered rewriting what I just wrote whilst inside so will summarise. F***ing blog site crashing yet again!!!!!

A small number of people are let into the inflatable structure's entrance at a time. We sit in the 'airlock' chamber and are give a short talk about tge installation and the dos and don't whilst inside it - ie you can sit and lie down inside but not jump on structures as tgey are delicate and can burst due to the amount of foot traffic passing through it.

A number of giant inflatable chambers linked by circular tunnels illuminated ceilings using the natural light from outside ambient meditative music playing in the background - looks like a spaceship from a 1970's sci fi movie - a little dissorientating after sometime inside it - each chamber a different colour - fake single coloured stainglass windows - lots of little nooks to sit in and relax in. From the outside it looks like a giant inflatable weird  shaped jumping castle but inside it is an inflatable maze - a little weird but wonderful. Half an hour stay time limit inside enforced - I staying to the max hope I haven't missed anything! We were told to be out as a group by a little after 6.30 pm - I think I did overstay as there was noone else in my group exiting at tge same time I did.

End of my visit - time to head home but not before I haave a look at the outdoir cinema also in Darling Harbour and part of the Sydney Festival.
