Monday 26th March 2018 - Art & About Sydney & the 21st Biennale of Sydney 2018 @ MCA

Took the M40 bus after midday today and walked to Circular Quay first to Customs House to see an Art & About Sydney art installation (unfortunately when I arrive to google its actual location it was actually located at Martin Place from 26th March to 29th March 2018 before moving to Customs House from 30th March to 3rd April 2018 then moving to Pitt Street Mall from 4th April to 8th April 2018 ) then to see another location of the 21st Biennale of Sydney 2018 Superposition Equilibrium and Engagement @ the MCA. Rating : 8/10

Photos attached and videos uploaded onto Youtube

Artists :
1. Clara Phillips - screen printing & sign making workshops

2. Brook Andrews

3. Chia-Wei Hsu - video using traditional puppetry

4. Tom Nicholson

5. Sosa Joseph

6. Esme Timbery - love her work - one of my  favourites - shell art by the indigenous is well known in the La Perouse area.

7. Marjolijn Dijkman - projection into a large spherical bowl

8. Yvonne Koolmatrie

9. Tuomas Aleksander Laitinen

10. Yarrenyty Arltere Artists - love this - another one of my favourites

11. Marc Bauer - monochrome ceramics - another one of my favourites

12. Hague Yang - weird but I really enjoyed all of the pieces in this art installation - you need to be a real artist or alcoholic to understand it though! A combination of sculptures and videos with lots of blinds in a dark room. Sight and sound but no smells detected. - another one of my favourites.

12. Jacob Kirkegaard - this art installation really freaked me out. Why was nobody else entering this dark room with only creepy sounds and a huge cement wall foor to ceiling that you could walk around? I videoed what I saw and heard - I did not dare to venture past the set of black curtains behind the cement wall fearing what was behind them - I only did so on my second visit when others were present. It reminded me of walking through the seedy dodgy Gastown Waterfront area very late at night with a friend in search of nightclubs when noone else is around - that "Let's turn back" feeling.

13. Nicole Wong

15. Lisa Lou - looks like burn out patterns on fabric but they are actually hundreds of sheets of woven glass beads each with a unique pattern on them.

16. Maria Taniguchi - loved this art installation. A photographers paradise reminds me of the chairs art installation during the Triennial @ NGV refer previous blog

17. Simryn Gill

18. Svay Sareth - a very long video projected on a very large screen about a man and his measuring instrument - a mending needle. Too long to watch entire video - sitting and watching just an extract of it was intriguing. Watch throughout the video of the interesting reactions of people around Svay on his measuring journey.

After I left the MCA it was time for a second attempt at finding the Art & About Sydney art installation. I took the train from Circular Quay Station to Wynyard Station then walked to Martin Place. It was not difficult to spot the Art & About Sydney sign at Martin Place. Beside it was a functioning vending machine - an interactive piece of art entitled "Intangible Goods". Instead of dispensing chocolate bars chips candy water juice or soft drinks etc it dispensed small medium and large packets of "nothingness" with different words of "stuff we increasingly need" on front & back of each of them. One of the packets "Tomorrow is a new day" was already sold out ( a sold out & restock sign would have made this artwork even more realistic ) . For $2 (any  size) a packet you can purchase your favourite packet of "nothingness" and the money raised goes to the charity Beyond Blue  - choices include such words as "purpose"  "bravery"  "spontaneity"  "reassurance" "friendship" etc. Rating : 9/10 - cash only no paywave or eftpos available for purchases - damn it!
