The above photo I took whilst walking between Bondi Beach and Tamarama Beach is a very interesting one although unrelated to Sculpture By The Sea in any way. Yes it is a rougue artist but also a copycat one too. I have seen these types of rogue scupltures many times along the Seawall walk around Stanly Park near English Bay Canada. It is an Inuit style sculpture. Obviously this rogue artist decided to leave his mark in Sydney Australia although it does not have the same appeal as it does overseas. One difference is the location the sculptures have been placed - in a more sheltered location then overseas where these rogue sculptures tend to be placed closer to the sea hence being eroding away by the tides and becoming less permanent artworks only to be recreated many times over by the same or different rogue artists.
I had chosen not to go on a Saturday or a Sunday as you can imagine the sea of people flocking to Bondi Beach over the weekend. Weekdays it seems are just as bad and it is only 11.30 am!
Photos attached of the queues for the buses @ Bondi Junction Interchange. It is going to reach 35 degrees celcius today!!!! It was probably cooler outside then inside on the M40 bus. It felt as if the heater was on in this bus and not the air conditioning - just what you need on a 50 minute bus ride express from Northern Sydney to Eastern Sydney! Now another connecting 333 bus from Bondi Junction Interchange to Bondi Beach with standing room only!
Just boarded the 333 bus bound for Bondi Beach - the bus is absolutely packed! Maybe I should have lined up for the 380 or 381 bus which just departed before this one - queues just as long but seemed to move faster.
This year Sculpture By The Sea is on from 19th October - 5th November 2017. I almost missed it this year with all the other events and places I attended and visited. I thought I would see it before it ends next weekend.
Because it is my birthday weekend next weekend and I have plenty of things already planned for next weekend (and I am sure there will be even more of a sea of people attending as it is the closing weekend of Sculpture By The Sea) I decided not to attend on the final weekend of Sculpture By The Sea.
This year there were 104 artists on display according to the Sculpture By The Sea 21st Annual Exhibition catalogue/program book (which I purchased for $10 at one of several information booths) between Bondi Beach and Tamarama Beach including Marks Park where you can also grab a bite to eat , have a toliet break , refill your water bottles or visit The Sydney Water stand for free samples of infused orange strawberry mint or lime water from large glass juice jars on tap or just view the miniture versions of Sculptures By The Sea for sale by artists inside an air conditioned tent.
Once I reached Tamarama Beach I caught the 361 bus back to Bondi Junction Interchange transferring onto an M40 bus home. It was so hot (to keep me cool I had poured cold water all over my clothes at least 3 times - once at the beginning of my walk at Bondi Beach then again at Marks Park and finally at Tamarama Beach - each time my clothes were bone dry before I reached my destinations) I could not bare to walk all the way back to Bondi Beach to wait yet again for another 380 381 or 333 bus back to Bondi Junction Interchange. Many others at Tamarama Beach had the same idea, the 361 bus was almost full but not as full as the 333 bus I was on earlier.
Rating 8/10 - it is a free annual event unless you want to buy a catalogue/program which is $10 and recommended so you don't miss any of the 104 sculptures between Bondi and Tamarama Beaches. These are available using cash or card at Sculpture By The Sea Information booths run mostly by volunteers. Even when Sculpture By The Sea is not on during the year, the self paced walk between Bondi Beach and Tamarama even continuing on beyond both destinations is spectacular and a must do for visitors to and residents of Sydney however beware of steps and steeps enroute.
