The annual Dining Out Vancouver event is on again and having been in Whistler I missed quite a few of the free events already however I managed to catch Food City - an area designated to a line up of food trucks and tables set up.
This year I was very disappointed with event - it was 3 pm and I had just arrived back in Vancouver and had not eaten all day so decided to get a bite to eat at this event.
Due to construction at the back of Vancouver Art Gallery, the annual event's regular possy - the event was moved to a section of Robson Street between Howe and Hornby Streets. Robson Street was closed off to traffic for this event - not a good idea as it is an inconvenience to traffic flow, it would have been better held underneath in the courtyard around the mini ice skating rink which is a popular venue and attract more people - what would go more hand in hand then indoor/outdoor free public ice skating and a wide variety of hot food on offer on cold winters days and nights right? It probably didn't happen due to the difficulty getting the food trucks down into the courtyard below - there is no traffic access - a large vehicle ramp would have to be temporarily installed.
Back to the event itself - very disappointed by the time I arrived, a few of the food trucks had left or closed completely and there was nobody around - those that were munching away sat where they could and mainly ate cheese melties of some sort - Why eat these when you can make them at home?! Where were all the interesting food trucks that were present in previous years? There was no atmosphere and too much open space. Because I was so hungry I bought my annual regular breaded oyster and maple slaw poh boy - $10. Again very disappointed this year - same truck same menu but the breaded oysters were over deep fried almost burnt and this burger did not taste as good as previous years! Slaw was a little sloppy too. Bun not a good bun just an average supermarket purchased hamburger bun. Really did not enjoy it but ate it because I was hungry. Would have preferred something from the menu off the Fat Duck food truck which had already closed probably sold out of items on their menu.
There waa a bit of Asian Kpop style dancing going on amongst the Dining Out Vancouver venue - not part of the food event but fun to watch.
Rating 4/10 - maybe better tomorrow being a Saturday. Weather usually affects this outdoor event especially rain but no excuses this year it has been pretty dry in Vancouver for this event so far. Not the right venue for this event and needed more interesting food trucks. On for 1 or 2 more days only - check out Dining Out Vancouver for exact details.
