I'm blogging live from "The Beach" at The Cutaway Barangaroo. If you are unfamiliar with The Cutaway and Barangaroo venue please read my old blog on simplesite.
Everything is white - there is no sand or water and there is no need to "Slip on a t shirt Slop on sunscreen Slap on a hat " as it is fully enclosed and therefore there are no harmful uv rays from the sun. It is quite hot inside The Beach though and there are life guards around. The white shores of The Beach are complete with deck chairs, beach umbrellas and giant inflatables - next time if I decide to revisit I will BYO my own inflatable from work.
A sea of millions of white recycled plastic balls with wall to wall mirrors to give the illusion of The Beach being larger then life.
I queued for an hour from 1 pm to get in and the recommended time for spending at The Beach is 45 minutes.
This is my first ever visit into a sea of balls and I had no idea how deep the sea of white plastic balls would be but like a normal beach the entry into the sea is a gradual decline or rather incline! The sensation is weird and I am unsure if I enjoyed my first experience in a sea of plastic balls or not. My work collegue made a comment of " Yuk! - Do you know how disgusting those ball pools are?" With this in mind the creators of "The Beach" had taken this into consideration as there will be millions of people visiting "The Beach" between the 7th and 29th January 2017 as part of The Sydney Festival , the white plastic balls are all made from recycled material and have an antibacterial material built into them as well as certain rules no food or drink inside "The Beach" except for water to keep "The Beach" clean.
I found it difficult to move around in the sea of balls so only spent about 15 minutes in the shallow end before getting out and blogging. I was getting hit by kids throwing the white plastic balls even when the rules were not to throw them only swim amongst them. Yes they hurt when hit by them ( just like snowballs that have been compressed too much are thrown at you) ! I just got hit in the head from another toddler with an inflatable watermelon ball whilst sitting on the sand (which was made from continuously perfectly laid white artifical grass!)
If you have ever been to the indoor water and wave park at West Edmonton Mall - it is a bit like that except exponentially more artifical!
(Photos attached - youtube video may follow - scraped the youtube video it didn't turn out that well and can't be bothered editing it)
Rating : 8/10 - let down extremely long queues but you can stay as long as you like without sunburn sharks sand or water - nice and cool! Ensure you go to the toilet before you enter the beach - no passes out unfortunately!
Also on display at Barangaroo was the future of Barangaroo transport - the Sydney Metro tent. In this tent there is information on the new Sydney Metro train line which starts and ends from Bankstown and starts and ends from the northwestern suburbs and linking Chatswood and Barangaroo via Crows Nest. Stage 1 is due for completion in 2018/2019. Inside the tent are also intereactive information screens kids activities area virtual reality seats and a life sized carriage of the new Sydney Metro train which you can step into and walk around. Very much like the light rail carriages the new Sydney metro trains will have their own dedicated railway line but will be completely driverless unlike the current NSW rail and light rail network.
